You can count many ways to attract backyard birds into your yard for you and your family’s enjoyment. Attracting the many different kinds wild birds to your backyard is one of the most rewarding things you can do both in the out of doors and while observing them as you peer from an inside window as long as you follow some basic guidelines. Where you happen to live doesn’t really matter. Backyard birds are abundant in most all parts of the country. I have observed birds from an apartment from single family dwellings, while in the city and in the country. They are almost everywhere, you just need to know how to attract them to where you live.
Backyard bird watching is one of the fastest growing outdoor recreations in the country and I’m so proud to say I am one of them.
Fast Ways to Attract Backyard Birds
The best way to attract the widest variety of birds to your yard or garden is to build or buy a few of the many bird feeders that can be found on the internet market today. You can also find them at pet stores and garden centers. I personally like building mine from scratch. It gives me a great sense of accomplishment and the plans are easy and cheap to get off the internet as well as the money saved over the commercial style bird feeders. Putting these feeders and a bird bath will bring them in like a magnet and you will see how much they enjoy what you are doing for them. You will find that the number of birds will and different types of birds will continue to be more and more if you will put different types of feeding stations such as a platform feeders as well as tube feeders hanging from trees and placing them on poles. If you have a garden you will find that the birds will not only hang around for the bird seed, they will assist you greatly by cleaning up any flying insects as well as bugs that you don’t want in your garden.
Backyard Birds Love Bird Baths
Trying to attract backyard birds to your home or garden sometimes can be very frustrating and labor some. You will want to use a good plan and make changes to your yard and their habitat on a more gradual basis. Don’t try to do everything at once. Add just one or two new items each year. Try hanging just one or two bird feeders the first year and maybe a bird bath the second. In just a few short years you will be the envy of the neighborhood because all of the local birds will live at your house. Many of the backyar birds that come to your backyard feeders and bird bath may stay and nest in nearby trees. Many of them will not nest in boxes. You will need to plan and consider their home and food requirements in your backyard birds planning.
When you set up your water system in your garden, you will want to plan for some kind of water feature that birds will love and adjust to quickly. Backyard birds like a shallow, rough-bottomed bird bath. Birds do not like water that is over two or three inches deep. If you install a re-circulating pump in a shallow pool or bird bath that features the sound of moving water you will find that it will attract a large number of birds and they will stay and play in the water for longer periods of time than a still pool of water. The other benefit to having water that is circulated is you will not have as much trouble keeping the water from getting stagnant or the problem with mosquitos. Water becomes a problem when it rests still at the bottom of a bird bath. Water for birds needs to be as close to a faucet as possible, for purposes of refilling and cleaning. You will also want to empty and scrub the birdbath every 2-3 days in the summer, to prevent algae and bacteria from contaminating the water.
If follow these basic guidelines you will have many enjoyable hours of watching wild birds just be themselves. They are a true gift from god.
Happy Birding
